Four Reasons Why In-Home Newborn Photography in London Is the Best Choice

You’re busy planning everything for their arrival. It’s all new, the nursery is half done (always a bigger task than initially you thought!) and the wardrobe is stocked. Nappies are being bought in bulk and piled in the corner of your London home. You’ve had friends say ‘oh you must get a photographer sorted’. The whole task feels overwhelming, there are so many options and variants. I totally get it.

I am here to help you navigate through the maze of questions you might have. One of the main starting points is where the photoshoot might happen. I think, most people assume it has to happen in a studio. People almost don’t even question that they might not need to do this. However, as a London based newborn photographer I’m here to let you in on my opinions of why an in-home Newborn Photoshoot in London is ultimately so much better.

REASON NO. 1: comfort & convenience for new parents.

The feedback I get from so many of my London parents for their Newborn Photoshoots is ‘God, we’re so happy you were able to come to us’ or ‘I couldn't have even imagined being able to step outside the house at this point, having you come here made this entirely possible’ or, most recently 'that was so SO easy. I wish I’d known how uncomplicated it could have been’.

You learn that you have to take each day as it comes and even leaving the house becomes a task that takes 3x as long as it did. By opting for an in-home newborn photoshoot rather than travelling to a London studio, you are able to wake up, spend the morning in your pjs, have a shower at a normal time, not have to worry about bundling your new little one into outdoor clothes. The heating can be on, the kettle can be on standby, ready to make you a cuppa whenever you need.

As your London newborn photographer, hand me the responsibility of travel, it truly isn’t something you need to be doing right now. We’re in your home which feels a safe space, and that is worth its weight in gold, especially right now.

Reason No. 2: we keep it baby led and relaxed.

By being in your home, we have everything we could possibly need for your little one, and for you, to hand. Blankets are in abundance, a change of clothes is only too easy. When working with newborns, we all are only too aware how unpredictable they can be, and if they decide to have a little moment, it is so comforting to think that you have your ‘go-to’ vices nearby. We’ll start the session with a feed, and this is something you can do in private or whilst we sit and chat and have a cuppa. I’ll talk you through the photoshoot and what it will entail, how we will be moving between the spaces and using your house to its full potential. But even after we have started the session, if you feel the need for a second feed, or you wish to stop for a quick snack, everything is all there to hand. You can breathe a sigh of relief knowing there is no time limit and by being in your space everything is so much more relaxed for your Newborn Photoshoot.

Reason No. 3: it’s more meaningful.

Truly, there is nothing more generic as a studio. Surely it is so much better to be within your space, taking photographs against walls that have encompassed your family for years. Your home holds a special place in your heart, and by taking the photographs in this space it encapsulates a moment that when you look back on you will feel so much more. It’s the space your baby can call their first home, the space where so many other memories will be made. The space where they will have their first giggle, take their first step, eat their first meal. Let’s take your family photos in a space that means something to you, rather than in a white walled studio that everyone else has already taken in. Your books on the walls, your paintings looking down on you, your bed sheets being cuddled on. Your London home is an extension of you, and therefore of your family. It is worth capturing it as such.

Finally, reason No. 4: because we are capturing real life and not just posed portraits.

My style of photography is about capturing the organic, the real, the natural. I want you to look back on the photos and feel ‘yes, that’s what it was like’. We’re going to be positioning you, but not posing an entire situation. I want it to feel personal to you, and by doing it in-home, we make that so much more possible.

A lot of clients voice a worry to me that their home won’t work for the kind of photographs that they want. My response is always: it will be perfect. Before the day of the photoshoot, I get you to send me over some quick snaps of the spaces in your home, so that I can assess what the natural light is like and how we might structure the newborn photoshoot. I have been doing this job now for eight years and we have always found a way to make the spaces work. They don’t have to be huge, they don’t have to be perfect. They simply have to have access to a small window (or large window) and be meaningful to you. I am an expert at walking into a home and being able to see where the two or three spots are that will work for photographs, and leading the way in utilising them properly. The space also doesn’t have to be immaculate, I’ll move tables, shift a chair or two, tidy away the surface of a coffee table, all before taking the photograph and therefore this is not something you have to worry about.

Don’t be the Mum that waited until her living room was tidy before booking the photographer, else you never will!

So drop me a message, say hi, let me know that you’re musing over the idea of wanting to photograph this new chapter. For your at home London newborn photoshoot, we’ll create a calm, relaxed experience that captures the love, connection, and beautiful little moments that make these early days so unforgettable.

Love, Ruby x
